VoIP provider Raketu announced that the mobile version of its VoIP software is now compatible with certain Windows Mobile-based devices. This means users with smartphones running the PPC2003, WinMobile5, and WinMobile6 Windows Mobile operating systems can now make free or super cheap VoIP calls using Raketu's VoIP service, which delivers digital phone calls over the public Internet.

All a user has to do is visit Raketu.com and download a client onto their phone which enables the website to operate on Windows Mobile devices. Then the user can make VoIP calls from the Raketu site, just as if they were on their PC at home (of course, the service provider will still charge the customer for the data usage, as per the customer's wireless plan). The software integrates with the Windows Mobile phone's existing contact lists, thus enabling the user to launch VoIP sessions just by clicking on a contact in the menu. Users of Raketu's Windows Mobile application will be able to take advantage of the same free calling promotion currently being offered to all pre-paid customers of Raketu's desktop based "RakOut" VoIP service. The promotional offer includes 1,200 minutes of free calling per month to landline and mobile phones in over 42 countries. Raketu Windows Mobile also lets users send instant messages, sms-text messages and email.

Mobile VoIP is set to take off -- and Web-based VoIP services such a Racketu are a first iteration, if you will, of the mobile VoIP revolution. Soon, wireless operators all across the globe will be rolling out mobile end-to-end VoIP on their next generation networks, but for now, Web-based VoIP services such as Racketu's are gaining popularity, as they can be accessed via a mobile Web browser, are simple to use, and are less expensive compared to VoIP services running on dedicated networks.
